German Fashion in Photos #6

Today we have a couple of nice gals sporting some very tailored looks and here the shoulder line is very squared off and that is only done with the mighty shoulder pad.  Shoulder pads are very helpful in getting the look but there are plenty of period examples that totally lack them. Now on to the fashion! Starting with the lady on the left. she is wearing some very dark colors but what I notice first is the sheen on her legs. That sheen is only possible with nylon stockings. This photo came out of an album where one photo was dated on the back with 1943. Many of the photos feature the same girls over and over and appear to be all taken within a couple of months or a year of each other. I was told a long time ago that "no German girls wore stockings or lipstick" and well . . .Her we have a girl from Germany wearing . . .well . . .stockings. Stockings were a scarce item in war time Germany but that does not mean no one was wearing them.

Now, onto the attire. Starting with the lady on the left, it is really hard to see what she is wearing but it looks like she may be wearing a long coat and under the coat is a skirted look. So why do I think she is wearing a coat? If you look at her knees there are two hem lines there for sure. It looks like she could have a blouse or knitted top underneath. I am not sure if she is wearing a suit, sweater, or even a dress underneath. She is not wearing a hat and she look to be holding gloves and maybe a small purse or even a camera in her lap.

Her companion is wearing a lighter colored coat with a very bold shoulder pad. Her coat looks like it has some pleating to the bodice and is bloused with a belt or tie of some sort. In fact, looking at another photo of her it is a tie belt.  She looks like she is not wearing a hat, may have a purse tucked under her arm and in her hands she too is holding something. Like the lady to the right, she is also wearing stockings.

Both women are wearing simple shoes based on the fronts of them.  Both women appear to have hair dos that are kept off of the face. The lady to the right has a shorter hair do that is confined to the back of the head. Personally, I really like these looks because they are wearing nice warm layers. Perfect because as reenactors, we know not every event is warm and dry.
