Frauen – Warte, 1941- 1942 Part 1

When I find a new source for my research, I get very excited. Especially when I find a gold mine of primary sources (a personal favorite)! This particular archive is from Heidelberg University, which has generously saved and digitized countless magazines and periodicals relating to German history and so far, my favorite has been the collection of Frauen – Warte magazines. If you are not familiar with this publication, it was the leading magazine for women in Nazi Germany and of all the women's magazines, this one was the more politically leaning one. This magazine had the usual women's interest topics: fashion, food, decorating, sewing, knitting, child rearing, etc.  You can see them all here by following this URL:

(and I hope you do as they are absolutely fascinating if you like cultural or fashion history)

Before I share all the lovely fashion pages, I will give you a very brief history of the magazine. Frauen – Warte was started in 1935 as an illustrated magazine for Nazi Women that gave them not only fashion advice but also cooking, childrearing, and general homemaking information. Along with the general home articles, there was also a dose of propaganda and Nazi ideology reminding women of their roles under the Nazi regime.

Of interest to me are the various fashion pages, mostly because I cannot read the German text. In these pages, there are very detailed illustrations telling women how to make do and mend yet still remain stylish, fashion a man's suit into a woman's, etc. Many of the fashions I have seen thus far are not necessarily high fashion but are tailored to the average woman aiming for chic practicality. In the pages are many different styles, accessories, and even crafts to make charming little accents to add a little something extra to ones dress. Many of the crafts highlight how to make dolls  for little girls. Another reason why I find these pages of importance and interest is because they offer insight of what was considered fashionable at the time. Shown here I selected only women's fashion and omitted men's and children's. If that is what you are interested in, then I recommend you follow the link mentioned previously.
Below is a selection of day wear, outerwear, lounge wear, active wear as well as much more to enjoy. I did not place them in any particular order.
