Dressing the 1940s German Bride: A Photographic Study Part 1

Over the fall and winter of 2023, I was commissioned with a unique opportunity to dress a fellow reenactor as a bride. She wanted it to be authentic as possible and she also gave me full creative license too. To get started, I referred to my collection of patterns and photos depicting German brides in the 1930s and 1940s. Here is the first set of photos of a lovely wedding including the bride and her attire. I think this wedding is from the 1930s based on the styles of the wedding party so a great prewar example of a wedding.

Studying this photo offers a great foundation for 1940s bridal wear going forward because in the next part of this mini-series is a 40s bride and her gown is not too far off from this one. Many women in 1940s Germany would also hold onto many 1930s styles in some way.

The bride is wearing a floor length gown with a charming collar that starts at the front and then wraps around the back. At the neckline, she appears to be wearing something, perhaps a brooch? Her veil is full and long, cascading down the back and with a wavy edge. For the front of her gown, there appears to be something there, but I cannot tell what it is. I am not sure if it is embellishment of the gown or something she is holding.

As for her bridal party, the bridesmaids are wearing each a different dress in a style that suits them.
