Women Reenactors of WWII: German Civilians . . . Lea

Welcome to the very first interview of the Women Reenactors of WWII: German Civilians series. To kick off the series, we have Lea. First off, thank you Lea for participating and thank you for sharing some of your own personal family stories as well. Lea has a unique impression, that of the black market in wartime Germany. Her impression is based off of family history and her own research. 1) Tell me about yourself! How did you get into doing a WWII German civilian impression and how long have you been doing this impression? I am Lea, I am 27 years old, and I currently live in Aachen. I grew up in a small city called Monschau in the German countryside near Belgium. My interest in history started at 12 when my grandma first told me about growing up in the second world war with four brothers. One of them was adopted because his parents died from a bomb attack. Being a civilian is often the first impression one takes on in reenacting. It is considered to be a cheap impression and a great starter one too. I agree. I think starting off as a civilian is a great idea because if you choose to do a military impression one would have started off as a civilian anyway and being a civilian is something we can all relate to being. However, I believe being a civilian is also one of the hardest impressions to do right. There are so many looks out there and so much research material to sift through that it can be incredibly overwhelming. Want a German impression? Well then things just got harder. . . much harder. . . . because there is not that much out there that is in the public domain. When I began to do research for a large paper to wrap up my college career I would very little out there in German civilian attire so I had to rely on my own private collection of images and two or three scholarly sources. Every once in a while I get an email from a reader about help getting a kit together for making a wardrobe for a German civilian impression. . .The reasons are all different but the questions are all the same: What kind of dresses should I look for? What hair styles? Looks? Trends? Where can I find accessories and clothes to improve my look and make it more authentic? How do I start to build this impression? For this post I want to take some time to really devote to answering these questions because I have learned that aside from this blog, some scholarly texts, and some images on Pinterest, there is not too much out there on German civilian women's fashion from the war years as a whole (or any years really) like there are for American or British fashions. Funny enough, when I started researching women's fashion in Nazi Germany, there was not too much out there and I had to rely on a couple of main scholarly texts one by Irene Guenther and then those by Lisa Pine and my colle
